I get a LOT of people requesting information on an inexpensive microphone that can be used with a Kodak Zi8 camera (which has an external microphone input) or any consumer or prosumer camera that’s cheap, easy to use and gets decent results.

Here’s one that’s only $23.99 from Amazon:

Audio Technica ATR-3350 Lavalier Omnidirectional Condenser Microphone

And in case you’re looking for an excellent deal on Kodak Zi8 replacement batteries, check this out – I found some that work for $2.55 each! (better than the $25 Kodak charges :) )

    Thanks again Mike.
    I would like to use my Zi8 for occasional clips at rock gigs too and I am thinking this might help?
    Also thanks for the hint on the batteries; one just isn’t enough!

    Hi Mike;

    Great service you are providing. I’m in the music business too like Ronnie in above comment.

    I have a burning quesion about the Zi8… Mike do you know if it would be possible to run a “BALANCED LINE” back into the Zi8′s 3.5 balanced input etc???? therefore allowing me to run digital instruments direct along with better room mics etc thru a DIGITAL MIXER?

    Also i have the possibility of running one small mixer the EDIROL M16 with batteries without the WallWart Transformer etc… This may aleviate the 60 cycle hum that may possibly be induced…

    Also I really really enjoyed your personal Comment about practicing a very conscious detachment in this ever fast moving technology world and in regards to making a living etc…. I’m going thru something similiar right now in regards to piano playing and the down sizing of performance venues.

    Warmest regards

    Ken

    Hey Mike,

    I bought this microphone and there’s just one problem – it only records to the left channel on the Zi8. I had a search online and sure enough if you have a mono input the Zi8 only records it to the left channel – so you probably want to go with a stereo mike, or grab an adapter (to convert 3.5m Male Mono to 3.5m Male Stereo) at the same time.

    Unfortunately in NZ the converters are not readily available so it might be time to drop ship from Amazon again – love the Zi8 though!
